The Isle of Lewis Chessmen needs little introduction as one of the most iconic and famous sets of chess pieces. Discovered on the Isle of Lewis in 1831 after a sandbank collapsed and revealed a chest that contained the chess pieces, they are said to date back to the 12th century and are likely to have been crafted in Norway. Indeed some people argue that the pieces should never have been named after the Isle of Lewis as this was not where they were made. Arguments about the original pieces continue to rage, mostly about where in the world they should be exhibited.
