Created to replicate the Jaques of London Circa 1849 Leuchars Staunton Pattern Chessmen, these reproduction pieces also bear the distinguishable markings of the king's crown on one white knight and one white rook, and one black knight, one black rook. As we know, these marked chess pieces will sit on the king's flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the king’s side of the board. In descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queen's knight' or the ‘king’s rook’.

With a king base diameter of 4 cm, the king and chessmen in this set are best suited to 53 cm boards.
