Dating from the 8th century BC, the city-state of Rome rose to power and subsequently gave its name to the incredibly advanced, powerful and sophisticated Roman Empire. The Romans expanded into one of the largest empires in the ancient world and evolved from a monarchy, to a classical republic and on to become an autocratic empire the likes of which the world has not seen, before or since.

Developing unprecedented advances in law, politics, government, art, literature, warfare, technology, society, language and religion, the Romans formed many of the foundations of the civilised society we now take for granted. They achieved incredible feats of architectural engineering with the construction of extensive roads and aqueducts along with large palaces, monuments and public facilities.

Queen: A Lady of noble birth in typical dress.
Bishop: A Standard Bearer carrying the insignia of the Legion.
Knight: Equestrian soldier of the period.
Rook: A Roman garrison tower.
Pawn: Armed Legionnaire of the period.
