The Regency Chess Company Recensioni:
Inspired by chess legend Daniel Harrwitz, this beautifully crafted set features 8.9 cm ebonised pieces, a luxury rosewood board from Spain, and a Manopoulos storage case.
Daniel Harrwitz was born in Breslau in 1821 and gained prominence in Paris, particularly for his exceptional skill in blindfold chess. In 1846, he competed in England against Howard Staunton, who played with the advantage of a pawn and two moves, resulting in Harrwitz’s defeat. Two years later, in Germany, he faced Adolf Anderssen, with the match ending in a draw.
He moved to England in 1849 and founded the British Chess Review during his time there. Moving to Paris in 1856, he secured a victory against Jules Arnous de Rivière. However, in 1858, he played a match against Paul Morphy. Despite winning the first two games, Harrwitz ultimately lost with a score of 5.5 to 2.5. He withdrew due to ill health and later retired from competitive chess. He passed away in 1884, aged 62.
In tribute to his legacy, several chess sets have been named after him. These 8.9 cm Harrwitz Ebonised Chess Pieces are beautifully crafted and offer exceptional value. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail in these solid wooden chessmen far exceeds expectations for such an affordable set.
Each piece is expertly turned from solid boxwood, with the black pieces undergoing an ebonising process to replicate the appearance of genuine ebony. The king’s knights and rooks bear the king’s crown, a feature often seen in reproduction sets. Additionally, every chess piece is perfectly weighted for balance and has a felted base for smooth movement.
To complement these exquisite pieces, we have paired them with a stunning large chessboard from Spain, crafted by the renowned chessboard maker Rechapados Ferrer. The board features luxurious mongoy palisander (rosewood) and maple veneers, resulting in a refined finish with clean lines and meticulous craftsmanship. The rich, dark reds and browns of the rosewood beautifully enhance the classic look of the Harrwitz chessmen.
For secure storage, this set includes a laminated wenge-coloured wooden chess piece case, expertly crafted by the renowned family-run company Manopoulos of Greece. The case features a spacious compartment, brass-coloured hinges, and signature Manopoulos brass clasps, ensuring a secure and elegant storage solution.
